Cubbington Flood Study Welcomed by MP

Warwick & Leamington MP James Plaskitt today gave his welcome to a proposal from the Environment Agency for a full flood study for Cubbington.  The recommendation is contained in a ‘pre-feasibility study’ published by the Agency and due to be considered by the Flood Forum, which next meets later this month.

The report rejects the options of doing nothing, or simply carrying on with existing maintenance levels.  It accepts that an ‘holistic’ study of Cubbington’s flooding problems is required - which could pinpoint substantial work being needed to secure a lasting solution to the village’s flooding problems.

The village has seen severe flooding in 1993, 1998, 1999, 2001 and most recently last June - when 50 properties were severely damaged.  Some residents affected in the June flood are still not back in their homes.

The Environment Agency’s initial assessment points to multiple causes of the flooding in the Cubbington.  But included in the causes are inadequate and poorly maintained drainage systems.

Mr Plaskitt said, “The call for a full flood study is welcomed.  It is what I suggested after last summer’s disaster.  There can be no more sticking plaster solutions for Cubbington.  We have to identify all the causes and then see them all fully dealt with.”

Mr Plaskitt added, “I am sure the forum will endorse this approach.  It seems to me to be the essential next step towards a lasting solution for Cubbington’s flooding problems.”

The local Flood Forum is due to meet next on January 28.  The Forum includes local resident representatives, following Mr Plaskitt’s request for this, made last year.
