Warwick and Leamington MP, James Plaskitt, has shown his commitment to Holocaust Memorial Day by signing a Book of Commitment in the House of
Commons.
January 27th marks the anniversary of the liberation in 1945 of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the infamous concentration and extermination camp. 2008 is the
eighth year that the anniversary has been officially commemorated in the UK. Thousands of
events are being held by schools, communities and faith groups across the country to commemorate not only those who have suffered at the hands of the Nazis in the Second World War, but all people
across the world who have suffered and continue to suffer extermination and persecution at the hands of others.
Mr Plaskitt said, “Holocaust Memorial Day has been recognised in Warwick and Leamington through small events in previous years, and I very much hope
that this important commemoration continues.
It provides a focus for each of us to reflect, remember and learn from the lessons of the Holocaust. It is a time for us to remember all the victims of
oppression and persecution around the world, and challenge all types of prejudice and discrimination which continue in our society today”.
